Annual Service Day for FFA, Garden Club & NTHS

On Friday March 22nd students from Salem County VoTech came out to The Inn for their Annual Service Day. Despite the weather being uncooperative, the students were still able to accomplish some of their goals! They were able to trail blaze an approximate 1.5 mile nature trail through the state grounds, as well as removing invasive and non-native vegetation along the trail and property.

The students did not only learn hands on, but also were able to attend workshops by Dr. Anne Nielsen, Dept. of Entomology, Rutgers University, and Allen Jackson, Wildlife Biologist and President of the NJ Blue Society. At the workshops, students were educated about the topic of local pollinators, native bee species and recovering bird species, such as the Eastern Bluebird. When the weather cooperates the students will be back to finish the rest of their goals, which include planting native vegetation along the trail, constructing and installing bird/bat houses for local species, installing a pollinator garden near the Inn for aesthetics and functionality, and painting a nature mural on a 8′ X 50′ privacy fence.

We look forward to seeing the students again and we are thankful for their service. We are glad they are able to help the community using the land of the former golf course which the State purchased in 2015 under the Green Acres program and is managed by NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife.
